.Even these words betray the mission of the Church of22I John 5.4.23John 17, 14 and V, 16.24Matthew 18, 7.25Opening Address, 2d Session, September 29, 1963.66Christ, which is to place the men of this world under the yoke ofChrist. And then, is it the duty of Bishops and Priests, perhaps, togive value to the world? Man is after earthly values on his own, while the Shepherds of souls must preach, opportune et impor-tune , that those human values are a nothingness before God andeternity, as the Apostle Paul had already preached: I count allthings& but dung, that I may win Christ26; that Christ who hadsaid: Whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that hehath, he cannot be my disciple 27.Paul VI, instead, goes on to repeat:«Our testimony is a sign of the approach of theChurch toward the modern world: an approachmade up of attention, of understanding, of ad-miration, and of friendship»28.A language back to front, therefore, of that used by St.James: know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity withGod?29.Even at the opening of Session IV of the Council, Paul VI hassaid:«The Council offers the Church, and Us espe-cially, a comprehensive view of the world: willthe Church, and will we be able to do anythingbut to look at the world and to love it? Thislook at the world shall be one of the fundamen-tal acts of the Session that is about to begin:once again and above all, love& »30.26Philippians 3, 8.27Luke 14, 33.28Special Audience, June 8, 1964 - Actes Pontificaux, Bellamin Editions (MT1),n.139, p.21.29Jacob 4, 4.30Council s IV Session, September 14, 1965.67Words that sound like a capitulation of a Church before theworld. But Paul VI s excitement grows unchecked:«A wave of affection and admiration flowed outfrom the Council over the modern world of hu-manity& The modern world s values were notonly respected but also honored (!!), its effortssustained, its aspirations purified andblessed»31.Now, this brimming over with love and admiration for theworld, whose values he honors , goes also counter to the Scrip-tures, which say: Love not the world, neither the things that arein the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Fatheris not in him 32.Nevertheless, Paul VI continued to disseminate his love forthe world, presenting the reconciliation of the Church as a absoluteevolution, an enrichment of the Catholic doctrine:«It seemed interesting to us to note some moreaux aspects of the Council, which wemight define as characteristic, and, consequent-ly, new and modern& One of these teachings, which changes our way of thinking, and, evenmore, our practical conduct, regards the viewwe Catholics must hold of the world in whichwe live. How does the Church regard the worldtoday? This vision, the Council has broadenedto us& broadened to the point of changing sub-stantially our judgment and approach beforethe world. The doctrine of the Church, in fact, has grown richer with a more thorough knowl-edge of Her being and of Her mission»33.31Council s Closing Address, December 7, 1965.32I John 2, 15.33Audience of March 5, 1969.68Hence to Paul VI, the Catholic approach before the Worldshould change , broaden , leaving of Tradition but a few marksof paint. He himself reiterates it:«& The framework of this encounter betweenChurch and World remains that of the Gospel. As a consequence, its fundamental theologicaland moral principles are the traditional andconstitutional framework of Christian morality. But, in addition, the Church accepts, recognizesand serves the world such as it presents itself toHer today. She does not reject the formulas ofthe synthesis Church-world of the past& but&the Church, in Christ and like Christ, loves theworld of today. She lives, She speaks, and Sheacts for it& »34
