.Courtesy NYC & Company The Convention and Visitors Bureau.You re in a Bronx historic district and will pass a number ofimportant buildings on Alexander Avenue.On your right,between 137th and 138th Streets, is St.Jerome  s RomanCatholic Church (1898).At the corner of 138th Street, onyour left, is the Fortieth Precinct (1924).Although you arein the South Bronx, this precinct is not  Fort Apache that was the Forty-first Precinct, to the northeast alongSimpson Avenue, south of 167th Street.Note the well-preserved rowhouses along Alexanderbetween 139th and 141st Streets.The New York Public Li-brary (1905) is on the left corner of 140th Street.On theright, at 141st Street, is the 1902 Tercera Iglesia Bautista(originally called the Alexander Avenue Baptist Church).Finally, on your left, note the large plaque for the East SideSettlement House between 141st and 142d Streets.As inManhattan s Lower East Side, settlement houses offer serv-ices and classes for immigrants and others in the Bronx. 362 THE OTHER BOROUGHS | A Driving TourBefore turning left on 142d Street, think about this: afew blocks to your right, along 142d, was the stone-carvingstudio of the Piccirilli brothers, who carved Daniel ChesterFrench s design for the Abraham Lincoln statue that sits in-side the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.Turn left on 142d Street.¢'Make your first right onto Third Avenue and drive four¢'lights.Turn left on Courtland and drive a few blocks untilyou reach 149th Street.Turn left on 149th Street.The Hub, to your right, is one of the Bronx s main shop-ping areas.We  ve steered you just west of the Hub becausethe intersection of five streets that makes it hublike alsomakes for traffic jams.The Hub was the site of the firstAlexander s Department Store and has housed theaters,burlesque houses, trolleys, and retail shops.It continues tobe a shopping hub.As you drive along East 149th Street, note the well-doneochre-colored brick Lincoln Hospital (1976), on your leftat Morris Avenue, and the Eugenio Maria de Hostos Com-munity College, called simply  Hostos by New Yorkersand begun in 1968, at the corner of the Grand Concourseon your left.Turn right on the Grand Concourse, which stretches four¢'and a half miles from the South Bronx northward and is180 feet wide at its broadest.The concourse was completed south to 161st Street be-tween 1902 and 1909 and extended farther south in the1930s.Especially in the 1920s and 1930s, the concourse be-came home to some of the Bronx s most elegant apartmentbuildings.Only the service roads were used for cars in the A Driving Tour | THE OTHER BOROUGHS 363beginning, with the larger center stretch for horses and car-riages.Now, of course, everything is a car lane.Turn right onto the concourse from 149th Street at theplain 1937 Bronx General Post Office on your right, withexcellent Ben Shahn murals in its lobby.Driving north onthe concourse, at 153rd Street, on your right you pass an oc-tagonal smokestack that was part of the Morgan SteamLaundry and then Cardinal Hayes High School (1941).Continue slowly.To your left is Franz Sigel Park, namedfor a German-born general who rallied many GermanAmericans to the Union cause during the Civil War.Turn left at 158th Street.The building on your right is the¢'1934 Bronx County Building.As soon as you make the turn, straight ahead you ll seeYankee Stadium, the  House That Ruth Built, rising upahead.Jacob Ruppert, a brewer, had the stadium built forhis team in 1923, and opening day was April 18.It was re-done in 1976.Over the years, famous Yankees have in-cluded Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, MickeyMantle, Roger Maris, and Reggie Jackson.Continue three blocks right up to the stadium and turn¢'right on River Avenue.This street is lined with sporting-goods stores.Most promi-nent are the series of baseball-related shops owned by Stan. The stadium is open for tours year-round, daily atnoon; go to the press entrance for admission.Continue one block under the El (#4 train) and turn right¢'on East 161st Street.Drive three blocks back to the GrandConcourse.Turn left onto the service road not the main,center lanes along the concourse [ Pobierz caÅ‚ość w formacie PDF ]
